How far the 2048 corner strategy goes
27 September 2026 · Hanpango · figures come from games played under the same rules as ours (4×4 board, new tiles are 2 with 90% and 4 with 10% probability, merges score their value)
The tip everyone hears
Everyone new to 2048 gets the same advice: keep the biggest tile in one corner and only push toward it. It works; scores jump once you learn it. But does it take you to the 2048 tile on its own? Rather than guess, we had the computer play five strategies to the end: the first four 2,000 games each and the slowest one 100 games, 8,100 games in all.
Five strategies, side by side
① random direction: average 1,112, never reached 512. ② fixed corner (down, then left, then right, up only when forced): average 2,514, reached 512 in 4.2% of games. ③ corner plus biggest merge first: 2,958, 512 in 11.5%, 1024 in 0.1%. ④ corner plus a board-shape score that rewards big tiles lined up along the bottom-left row: 3,294, 512 in 17.2%, 1024 in 0.1%. ⑤ look ahead at every empty square where a 2 or 4 could land and weigh even the awkward cases: average 23,190, 512 in every game, 1024 in 91%, 2048 in 55%, with one game reaching 4096.
The corner doubles your score, then stops
Going from ① to ② more than doubles the average and lifts games that build a 256 tile from 9.3% to 49.6%. The tip is popular for good reason: with the big tile parked, the next-largest can grow beside it and merge. Yet strategies ②, ③ and ④ together played 6,000 games and none reached 2048; only three reached 1024. The corner carries the opening but not the middle game.
The wall is the one move that breaks the corner
Watching strategy ② fail, one scene keeps coming up. You push left while the bottom row still has a gap, and a new 2 lands in it; now the big tile cannot get back and small tiles wedge between large ones. Or every other direction is blocked, you push up, the corner empties and a 2 drops straight into it. Strategies ① to ④ only look at the board in front of them. ⑤ differs in one thing, where the next tile might land, and that alone multiplies the average by seven and gets more than half of its games to 2048. What separates players is not the resolve to guard the corner but seeing the empty square before the tile arrives.
Lookahead a person can use
- Fill the bottom row first. With no gap there, left and right pushes cannot disturb it and new tiles can only land above.
- Before each push, ask what becomes empty. If the square beside the corner opens, ask whether you could recover if a 2 landed there.
- Protect empty squares. A move that leaves more space tends to outlive a move that merges more right now. Down to two or three empty squares, a forced push up is close.
- Line big tiles up in size order. 1024, 512, 256 running from the corner merge in a chain when the time comes.
The corner is where you start; looking one tile ahead is what keeps it. Hanpango's 2048 has a daily challenge that opens at midnight with every tile arriving in the same order and square for everyone, so who looked further ahead shows directly in the score.
