Game stories to read away from the game
Most Hanpango games finish in one to ten minutes, and a finished round sometimes leaves a question behind. How many guesses is a good Number Baseball score? Is it really true that our minesweeper never needs a guess? What should you look for when a hard sudoku stalls? This collection exists to answer questions like these.
Wherever possible the figures are counted ourselves, by generating thousands of boards with the same code the games use or by testing every possible answer. When a figure comes from elsewhere, we say who established it and when.
Games in numbers
- Number Baseball by the numbers — all 5,040 answers tested: 5.3 guesses on average, never more than 8.
- How a minesweeper that never needs a guess is made — pass rates from 12,000 random boards, and the 1-2-1 pattern.
- Five techniques for when a sudoku stalls — from naked singles to the X-Wing, in the order you use them.
- How far the 2048 corner strategy goes — five strategies, 8,100 games; the corner alone never reached 2048.
- Is a ladder draw fair? — 100,000 hand-drawn ladders: with five players and five rungs, the leftmost player stays put 44.8% of the time.
- Gomoku: how big is the first-move advantage? — 30,000 computer games: black leads by 1–2 points, and four-threes decide 53% of games.
- Number Baseball: choosing the second guess — reading the first reply halves the worst case; 5.30 guesses on average.
- What is an average reaction time? — a 273 ms median on web tests; Whack a Mole needs each tap within about 800 ms to keep 89% of the moles.
- How to get better at the 10-second game — your miss comes from counting pace, not your fingers; a 0.1 s miss is 96.7% at 3 s but 99.3% at 15 s.
- How to solve a nonogram — blocks longer than the slack fix their middle; the first pass settles 62% of an easy board but only 19% of a hard one.
- How many flips is a good Memory Match score? — perfect memory still averages 31.3 flips on a normal board; a flawless game is 1 in 10,395 even on easy, and eight remembered cards are enough.
- Pass the Bomb: who is most likely to lose? — seating shifts the odds by a few points; a player three seconds slower loses 37% of four-player rounds, and the last stage lasts 4.5–16.2 seconds.
- Higher or Lower: why betting on the middle loses — on a coin flip, calling towards the middle averages 1.63 in a row and towards the nearer edge 2.44; a chain of ten is fourteen times likelier.
- One-stroke drawing: the odd-point rule and the checkerboard rule — zero or two odd points means one stroke; on cell puzzles the start and exit colours fix whether every route is odd or even (checked on 3,650 boards).
- Best first word for the Korean word game — across 1,994 answers, 안식 leaves 23.8 candidates after one row and 긴장 solves in 3.11 guesses on average, against 3.48 for a typical opener.
