750ms53.5점29.5점
850ms42.7점23.3점

Whack-a-Mole score math: judge the bomb, not just the speed

23 October 2026 · Hanpango · figures come from the actual Whack-a-Mole board generator (nine holes, 60 seconds, bombs cost 2 points) run on 5,000 different boards

Fast hands or sharp eyes?

Whack-a-mole is called a reaction game, but bombs are mixed in and a bomb costs 2 points. So what separates scores: speed, or telling the bomb from the mole? We lifted the game's own board generator, drew 5,000 different boards and scored simulated players on them. The rules: 60 seconds, a 3×3 grid, 1 point per mole tapped while it is up, minus 2 per bomb, no penalty for a miss, and the score never goes below zero.

What a board looks like

A board has 75.4 appearances on average: 61.9 moles and 13.5 bombs, so a perfect run that taps every mole and no bomb scores about 62. The board speeds up: in the first 15 seconds a mole stays up 1,172 ms and a new one appears every 934 ms; in the last 15 seconds it stays 838 ms and one appears every 651 ms, 21.5 appearances against 15.8, 36% more. And 96.1% of the time the previous one is still up when the next appears, so the screen almost always shows two or more. It is a game of ordering, not of tapping one at a time.

Simulated players

Time per tap covers finding the target, moving the finger and pressing. The player works through appearances in order and misses any that go down first. Skipping bombs scores 61.9 at 550 ms or faster, 60.2 at 650, 53.5 at 750, 42.7 at 850 and 21.9 at 1,000. Tapping bombs too scores 34.9, 33.6, 29.5, 23.3 and 11.8. The gap between the two is about 27 points at any speed, 13.5 bombs times 2. A player who skips bombs at 650 ms (60.2) beats one who taps them at 550 ms (34.9) by more than 25 points.

Slow players collapse at the end

Miss rate by 15-second segment. At 650 ms: 0%, 0%, 0.1%, 9.6%. At 750 ms: 0%, 0.1%, 10%, 37.9%. At 850 ms: 0.1%, 9.6%, 36.5%, 66.1%. At 1,000 ms: 19.5%, 49.1%, 76.7%, 99.1%. A 750 ms player is on a near-perfect pace until 45 seconds and then loses 38% of the moles. For players around 650 to 750 ms the first half barely separates them; the last 30 seconds decide the score.

So play like this

Tell bombs by their dashed outline and never tap to check; a skipped bomb costs nothing and a tapped one costs two moles. Take appearances in the order they came up, oldest first, because two or more are almost always showing. Save your attention for the last 30 seconds and keep your eyes on the whole board. Forget a missed mole: there is no penalty, and looking back for it costs the next target. The simulated player recognises bombs perfectly and takes the same time on every tap, so read the scores as a comparison only.
