Number Baseball by the numbers

26 September 2026 · Hanpango · every figure below was counted by testing all 5,040 possible answers

There are exactly 5,040 answers

An answer in Number Baseball is four different digits from 0 to 9 in a fixed order. Ten choices for the first place, nine for the second, eight for the third and seven for the fourth give 10 × 9 × 8 × 7 = 5,040 answers. A leading zero is allowed, so 0439 is one of them.

Ten tries can sound generous or tight depending on the day, so instead of guessing we counted. Knowing how much each question shrinks the list tells you what the next guess should be trying to do.

The first guess can only get 14 replies

Whatever four digits you open with, the structure is the same; only the digit names change. Against 0123, the 5,040 answers split as follows: 1 ball 1,440 · 2 balls 1,260 · 1 strike 1 ball 720 · 1 strike 480 · out 360 · 3 balls 264 · 1 strike 2 balls 216 · 2 strikes 180 · 2 strikes 1 ball 72 · 3 strikes 24 · 4 balls 9 · 1 strike 3 balls 8 · 2 strikes 2 balls 6 · 4 strikes 1.

The most common reply is a single ball, which leaves 1,440 candidates. Two details stand out. "3 strikes 1 ball" never appears: if all four digits are right and three are in place, the fourth has nowhere else to be. And an out is rarer than it feels, about one opening in fourteen (7.1%), so an early out is a lucky break rather than a wasted turn.

Strikes plus balls comes first

Strikes plus balls is simply how many of your four digits are in the answer. Grouped that way, 0123 shares no digit with the answer 7.1% of the time, one digit 38.1%, two digits 42.9%, three 11.4% and all four 0.5%. More than 80% of the time the answer holds one or two of your four digits. The opening move is therefore not about positions at all; its job is to find out which digits are used. Positions are cheaper to settle afterwards.

5.3 guesses on average, never more than 8

We played one human-followable strategy against all 5,040 answers: open with 0123, then always pick, from the answers still consistent with every reply so far, the one that leaves the fewest candidates on average. Because every guess could be the answer, every guess is also a chance to win.

It needed 5.32 guesses on average, and the worst answer took 8. Only 3 of the 5,040 answers needed eight. 768 were solved within four guesses, 2,055 on the fifth, 1,923 on the sixth and 291 on the seventh. Played by logic, the limit of ten leaves room for two mistakes.

Is 0123 then 4567 a mistake?

The game's own tips suggest opening with two non-overlapping blocks such as 0123 and 4567. Two replies then cover eight digits and the remaining 8 and 9 follow by arithmetic, which is restful. The cost is that the second guess ignores the first reply.

Opening that way and switching to the strategy above from the third guess averages 5.45 guesses, again never more than 8, just 0.13 slower. That gap is smaller than one guess per game, so if the bookkeeping tires you the fixed opening is the safer choice. If you want the shortest route every time, choose the second guess after reading the first reply.

A routine you can play by hand

  • Use the first two guesses to identify digits. Ignore positions and note only strikes plus balls.
  • Once the four digits are known, only order remains. Four digits can be arranged in just 24 ways.
  • Guess from answers that are still possible. A guess that contradicts an earlier reply has no chance of winning.
  • Write the list down when it is short. Under ten candidates, paper beats memory.

After an out the game greys those four digits on the keypad, so you can think about the remaining six. The daily puzzle opens at midnight with the same answer for everyone, which makes the number of guesses a fair thing to compare with friends.
