How to memorize Korean four-character idioms

19 October 2026 · Hanpango · Figures come from counting the characters of the 130 idioms in our Idiom Quiz

Group them by a shared character

Learning 130 idioms one at a time means 130 separate memories. Hook them on a shared Chinese character instead and several arrive together. Counting every character in the quiz's 130 idioms, 之 (the possessive particle) appears in 17, 一 (one) in 12, 不 (not) in 8, and 心 (heart) and 同 (same) in 7 each. Those five characters alone cover 48 idioms (37%); the ten most frequent cover 64 (49%) and the top twenty cover 81 (62%). 120 of the 130 idioms share at least one character with another one. In 14 of the 17 idioms with 之 it sits in third place and reads as "the last character of the first two", which half-explains all fourteen at once.

Shapes, look-alikes and the quiz

21 idioms contain numbers and 14 repeat a character, so their shape is a memory aid of its own. Fourteen pairs share two or more characters, and those are exactly the ones people swap on a quiz, so learn them side by side. In blank questions the hidden syllable is spread evenly over the four positions (33, 32, 32 and 33 idioms), and the four choices come from the same position of other idioms. Since 46% of hidden characters also appear in another idiom, knowing the groups tells you which syllables can sit in that slot. The daily challenge serves ten idioms a day and cycles through all 130 in thirteen days.
