Stop! score math: random presses already earn 38 points

29 October 2026 · Hanpango · figures use the actual scoring of Stop! (distance normalised by each round's tolerance; two spot, two size and one angle round; the game's speed and tolerance ranges) run on 20,000 rounds per cell

What score counts as skill?

In Stop! a dot sweeps, a circle swells and shrinks, or a bar rotates, and you tap once when it lines up with the target. A game is five rounds and the average is the record. Is 70 good? To get a baseline we measured tapping at a random moment within the 10 seconds.

Spot rounds average 39.7, size rounds 47.4 and angle rounds 14.2, so a full game of two spot, two size and one angle round averages 37.7. Because partial credit is paid anywhere inside the tolerance, even random taps land in the high thirties. Treat scores near 40 as indistinguishable from luck and read skill from 70 upward.

What does always being late cost?

People tap after they see the mark touch the target, so they are almost always late. For a simulated player who is late by the same amount after the first pass through the target, the averages are: 0 ms 99.6 / 99.2 / 99.3 (spot / size / angle, game 99.4); 50 ms 92.8 / 91.6 / 87.6 (game 91.3); 100 ms 85.3 / 82.4 / 74.5 (game 82.0); 150 ms 77.7 / 73.2 / 61.4 (game 72.6); 200 ms 70.2 / 64.3 / 48.3 (game 63.5); 300 ms 55.5 / 52.6 / 22.7 (game 47.8). A player who is 200 ms late is only 25.8 points above random tapping, and at 300 ms late the score nears luck.

The angle round is the harshest

The same delay costs different amounts per round. Average speeds are 150 px/s for spot, 95 px/s for size and 130°/s for angle, while the tolerance that turns a score to zero is 100 px, 52 px and 50°. Speed divided by tolerance is 1.5, 1.8 and 2.6, so 100 ms of lateness removes about 14, 17 and 25 points. In raw units 100 ms is 15 px of spot, 9.5 px of size or 13° of angle.

So play like this

Do not tap on sight; tap early by your own delay. A player who is always 200 ms late would go from 63.5 to the high nineties by moving the tap forward by that amount (see our reaction time article for typical delays). Let the first pass go on dots and circles and use the second to correct. Save your focus for the single angle round, where the same delay costs the most. And never let a round run to 10 seconds, which scores zero. The simulated player has a fixed delay and random taps are spread evenly over 10 seconds; real people vary more, so read the comparisons rather than the absolute numbers.
