Five techniques for when a sudoku stalls
26 September 2026 · Hanpango
Hard boards are not boards with fewer clues
Difficulty is usually described by the number of given digits. Hanpango's Sudoku leaves 40–45 clues on Easy 9×9 boards, 32–36 on Normal and 26–30 on Hard. Yet clue count alone does not decide difficulty: some boards with barely twenty clues fall quickly, while some with more than thirty hold you up for a long time.
What makes a board hard is the technique it requires. That is why Hanpango's Hard boards carry one more condition: any board the two easiest techniques can finish is never shipped as Hard. This page starts from those two and lists five techniques in the order you reach for them.
Sudoku in numbers
The number of completed valid 9×9 grids was computed in 2005 to be 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960. In 2012 an exhaustive search proved that a puzzle with a unique solution needs at least 17 clues; no 16-clue puzzle has only one answer.
Hanpango's 6×6 mini board, with boxes three wide and two tall, is far smaller. Counting it directly gives 28,200,960 completed grids: with the first row fixed as 123456 there are 39,168 ways to fill the rest, multiplied by the 720 orders of the first row.
1. Naked single — only one digit fits this cell
Pick a cell and strike out every digit already present in its row, column and box. If one digit remains, that is the answer. New singles keep appearing as the grid fills, so re-check the neighbourhood after every entry instead of sweeping once. Cells where crowded rows and boxes meet are the fastest place to look.
2. Hidden single — this digit fits only one cell
Turn the question around. Choose a box (or a line) and a digit it still lacks, and ask where in that box the digit can go. Rows and columns that already hold the digit elsewhere are blocked; if one cell is left, it is the answer even if that cell has several other candidates. Easy and Normal boards mostly finish with techniques 1 and 2 alone.
3. Naked pair — two cells share two digits
When 1 and 2 dry up, it is time to pencil in candidates. You will then see two cells in one unit whose only candidates are the same two digits, say 4 and 7. You do not know which is which, but those two cells must take 4 and 7 between them, so 4 and 7 can be removed from every other cell in that unit. When a removal leaves a cell with one candidate, go back to technique 1. The same idea works for three cells sharing three digits.
4. Box–line interaction — when a digit is confined to one line
Suppose that inside a box every possible place for 5 lies on the same row. The box's 5 must then be on that row, and since a row holds one 5, no cell of that row outside the box can be 5. It also works in reverse: if within a row the 5 can only go inside one box, remove 5 from the rest of that box. Following one digit at a time through your pencil marks makes these easy to spot.
5. X-Wing — a rectangle made by two lines
Focus on a single digit. If in two different rows that digit has exactly two possible cells each, and those cells sit in the same two columns, the four cells form the corners of a rectangle. The digit must occupy one of the two diagonal pairs; either way each of the two columns already gets it once, so it can be removed from every other cell in those two columns. Swapping rows and columns works identically. Most newspaper "hard" puzzles give way at this stage.
A checking order for when you are stuck
- After each entry, re-run techniques 1 and 2 on that row, column and box.
- If neither helps, fill in all candidates. On Hanpango, switch on ✏️ notes; notes clear themselves as digits are confirmed.
- Look for pairs among two-candidate cells (3).
- Take one digit and see whether it is confined to a line within a box (4).
- Still stuck? Search digit by digit for two-line rectangles (5).
Every Hanpango board has exactly one answer, checked each time a clue is removed during generation. Being stuck means some logic has not been applied yet, not that luck ran out. The daily 9×9 Normal board that opens at midnight is good practice for getting technique 3 into your hands.
