How to choose a game
Decide one thing first
There are 37 games in the list. Spending your break deciding what to play is the one waste this page tries to prevent, so start with a single question: how many minutes do you actually have? Once that is fixed, more than half the list rules itself out.
When you have a minute
10 games finish within a minute: Ten-Second Sense · Stop! · Just Right · Spot the Fake · Do the Opposite · Higher or Lower · How Many Were There · Two on One Screen · Four at Once · Quick Math. They fit the wait for a lift or for water to boil. None of them need the rules read first; opening the page shows you what to do.
What short games share is that a mistake cannot be taken back. One press ends the judgement, so the sensible approach is to play several rounds and let the feel develop.
When you can sit for five minutes
10 games can run five minutes or longer: 2048 · Block Drop · Daily Word · Brick Breaker · Sudoku · Minesweeper · Nonogram · Gomoku · Push It Right · Number Baseball. These reward making a plan and finding out whether the plan held. Because stopping halfway feels wasteful, check that you can stay seated before you start one.
When you are not alone
With two or more people the options change. 6 games are built to share one screen or to take turns: Ladder · Two on One Screen · Gomoku · Pass the Bomb · Four at Once · Liar Game. One phone in the middle of the table is the whole setup; nobody needs to take out their own device.
In this group, reading the rules aloud once decides more than skill does. A single player holding a wrong version of the rules is enough to spoil the round.
When you want a daily habit
32 of the 37 games carry a daily challenge. A new problem opens at midnight and everyone playing that day receives the same one. The one attempt per day limit stops you from sinking an evening into it, which is exactly what makes it easy to keep up. How those rounds are generated is described in what the daily challenge is.
Head or hands
Equal amounts of time can tire you in different ways. Some games, like the logic puzzles, ask for long thought and almost no hand movement. Others, like the falling block and shooting games, keep the decisions simple but the hands busy. On a mentally tired day the second kind is easier; on a physically tired day the first. This split has nothing to do with difficulty.
If you still cannot choose
Today's pick lets the date choose three games for you. It exists for the days when choosing is itself the chore.
